I was guilty of not checking my filter regularly until I got into the air filter business and gained insight and knowledge.  (And also felt a little shame) Home FurnaceYou should, at a minimum, check your filter on a monthly basis.  You may not need to change the filter monthly but it's a good idea to check to make sure you're getting the most out of your furnace. This is ideal for optimal indoor air quality and for increasing energy efficiency.
A variety of outside issue can create issues why you need to change your filter. Could your air ducts be leaking? Things you might not think about. Is there construction in your neighborhood? Do you have pets? (I know, this is the second time we've mentioned pets, but we promise we love them!) Any of those factors could lead to your air filter getting dirty a lot quicker than you think.
